The King James Case
I. Scripture Texts
2 Timothy 3:13 – 17; Matthew 24:35; Proverbs 30:5 – 6
II. Introduction To The Texts
A. You cannot know what is not available to you (2 Timothy 3:15)
B. “All Scriptures” not just the parts you and I like.
C. Profitable primarily for:
1. Doctrine
2. Reproof
3. Correction
4. Instruction in righteousness
D. You cannot be perfect without it
E. The Words of Scripture will never pass away
F. Every Word is pure!
III. The corrupting of the Words of God
A. 2 Corinthians 2:17 (they corrupt them)
Jeremiah 8:9 (they reject them)
Jeremiah 23:36 (they pervert them)
Revelation 22:18 – 19 Note the following things in this passage: 1. In order to hear the words you have to have the Words. 2. You are warned after hearing the words not to add to them. 3. You are warned not to take away from the words of the book.
B. There are over 200 new “improved” translations on the market today and each claims to be the “most accurate” translation with the latest research and scholarship going into the “work”. Each translation contradicts each other on any number of passages.
C. With a flood of “new” Bibles on the market today it is important that we know which Bible to use and what Bible has God’s stamp of approval and most importantly which Bible is the Word of God. The truth of the matter is that God has only given us one Bible as His final authority for the believer. All other Bibles are false.
D. Modern translations change the King James Bible over 36,191 times. There are only 5,000 New Testament Greek words. That is 7 times as many changes as there are in the language itself.
IV. The Work of Origen In Corrupting The Text
A. Origen was an early church “father” who was schooled in Alexandria Egypt. This school was known for its allegorical approach to the Holy Scriptures. They did not believe in the doctrine of preservation and did not believe in the literal interpretation and approach to the holy Scriptures. They had no problem “correcting” problem texts and passages that conflicted with their theology. Origen is the author of the Hexapla. This contained six versions of the Old Testament set in vertical columns. In the fifth column he had a copy of the Septuagint otherwise known as LXX. It was a corrupt version of the Old Testament printed in Greek. It has many omissions and corrections to the Hebrew text. In addition it contained the corrupt Apocrypha use by the Catholic Church in addition to other apocryphal books. Origin use this as part of his theological outlook and as far as his views he was a semi-Arian. He believed that Jesus Christ was a “lesser god” inferior to God the Father and believed that the soul could be reincarnated. The story of Adam and Eve was a myth as far as he was concerned. Infants who were not baptized were Hell bound. There is no such thing as a physical resurrection according to Origen. There are many other strange beliefs that Origen held to but these are a few samples to help you to see who we are actually dealing with.
B. Codex Sinaiticus
1. This codex was found in St. Catherine’s monastery… In a waste basket.
2. It’s omissions include:
John 5:4; John 8:1 – 11; Matthew 16:2 – 3; Romans 16:24; Mark 16:9 – 20; 1 John 5:7; Acts 8:37
3. It adds the Shepherd of Hermas and the Epistle of Barnabas as part of the New Testament text. The other additions include the Old Testament Apocrypha as the Catholic Church currently has it in their Bibles.
4. It originally had 730 leaves but now it has 390 leaves.
C. Codex Vaticanus
1. “Found” in the Vatican at Rome.
2. Originally had 820 leaves but now only has 759 leaves.
3. It’s omissions include: Genesis chapter 1 through chapter 46:28; Psalm 106 – 138; Hebrews 9:14 through the end of the Book of Revelation. It adds the Old Testament Apocrypha.
V. Origen and the great philosophers influence
Colossians 2:8 – 9
A. Origen embraced many Gnostic doctrines for example: no literal Heaven, no blood atonement, and no resurrection. This is the church “father” that we are going to trust to give us a pure undefiled text?
VI. The pure Word of God
Psalm 12:6 – 7; Psalm 119:89; Matthew 4:4
VII. The true Word of God has no copyrights!
2 Timothy 2:9
1. Every “new” Bible on the market today has a copyright on them which shows the true motive in producing them by these publishers. (2 Peter 2:3; Acts 17:21; 2 Corinthians 4:2)
2. The King James Bible is the only Bible on the market today that does not have a copyright because you cannot copyright the Word of God! (Ecclesiastes 8:4)
